White Tanba tea bowl - Naosaku Masamoto

Height 8.5 cm x diameter 14.0 cm

1. "Early spring haze" reflected in the white Tamba glaze

The white Tanba glaze that covers this piece is a soft milky white, reminiscent of the light of melting snow. Behind it, the glaze has a faint cherry pink hue, casting a shadow like a pale morning mist. The iron powder scattered during firing shines like pointillism, creating a lovely stardust effect on the rustic earthenware.

2. The pale pink scenery awakened by the hot water

When warm water is poured into the pot, a faint pink color appears on the surface. This is because the traces of copper visible in the white glaze and the iron in the clay react with each other due to the temperature. When the pot is boiled in water during a tea ceremony, guests can admire the fleeting "signs of peach," and a quiet sense of surprise and joy fills the room.

3. The scenery created by the penetrating nebula

The fine crazing that runs across the surface of the bowl will soak up tea stains over time and turn a light brown to ink color. The more the bowl is used, the deeper the nebula will become, and with the warmth of the owner's hands, a unique expression will develop.

4. A neat shape that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand

The softly inflated body and gently tapered rim of the tubular shape provide excellent heat retention and are useful in both robber and furo seasons. The base is modestly cut and the depth is slightly deeper, allowing the chasen to fit naturally and beautifully creating a nice foam. The swaying body leaves soft impressions on the fingers and fits comfortably in the palm of the hand, so you won't feel tired even after long hours of practice.

5. Masamoto Naosaku and the pride of Naosaku Kiln

Naosaku Kiln is one of the oldest kilns that continues to carry on the spirit of the Six Ancient Kilns of Tanba to the present day. They continue to use climbing kiln firing with red pine firewood, and are thorough in achieving both "use and beauty" by supporting the parts that are left to chance with calculation and experience. In this work, too, by carefully reading the flow of the flame during firing, they have achieved a delicate coloring that traps subtle crimson and stardust in the white glaze.

6. Usage and care instructions

First use : Lightly rinse with water to moisten the cracks before using.

Cleaning : After use, rinse gently with lukewarm water, wipe dry with a soft cloth and dry in the shade.

Things to avoid : Using detergents, soaking in water for long periods of time, or using hard sponges will prevent the porcelain from breathing and will damage the glaze surface.

7. The joy of wabi deepens with the passage of time

The purity of the white Tanba glaze, the fleeting pale pink, the nebula of crazing - all of these slowly change with the time of the user. When the tea stains form lines and the surface of the glaze becomes moist and settled, the tea bowl will grow into a "partner" that reflects the owner's feelings.

The tranquil white of the Shirotanba glaze and the pink that blooms faintly in the steam. Masamoto Naosaku's Shirotanba tea bowl adds a little surprise and a gentle aftertaste to every tea ceremony, bringing a refined finish to the tea ceremony. Please treasure it for a long time and enjoy the unique scenery that has been nurtured by time.
