Yuichi Ikai was born into a pottery merchant in Gojozaka, Kyoto, and studied under Uichi Shimizu, a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property "Iron-glazed Pottery." He then established his own unique style of pottery. He creates pottery that is not influenced by the times, but seeks to find universal beauty.
