Iron-glazed kiln-changed sake cup by Okada Masaru - "A pale purple star mist flickers in this small cup that scoops up the evening darkness."

The appeal of the work

A small sake cup with a deep, dark iron glaze, exuding a silvery blue light and a purple-red flame. The lower half is narrowed in a straight line, while the upper half rises smoothly in a single step, and the mortar-like inner wall captures the aroma. The cup has a slightly rough, matte finish that feels smooth to the touch. When sake is poured into it, the darkness deepens, and the silver sand reflects the faint light, creating a faint nebula.

The author's perspective

Mr. Okada Masaru believes in "capturing the landscape in the form of a vessel," and has condensed the midnight of Uji's coal mines into this sake cup. The darkness of the iron glaze ... the silence of the night mountains, the silver-blue membrane ... the shimmering starry mist, the pale pink streaks ... the glow of the charcoal fire. Every time you hold it in your palm and sip, the night view of the mountain village quietly changes within the cup.

Conclusion

A sip of sake is filled with starry mist, and the pale pink glow of the flame reveals its temperature. Enjoy it as the night deepens, whether you're drinking in the evening or serving it to guests. The more you use it, the more the ingredients of the sake will seep into the glaze, deepening the layers of darkness and particles of light.
