Iron-glazed kiln-change sake bottle by Okada Masaru - "Jet-black layers overlap the mountain ridges, and the silver of the moonlight flickers secretly - a sake bottle that reflects the night view."

Overview of the work

The evenly spaced steps around the body create a three-dimensional rhythm reminiscent of the overlapping ridgelines of distant mountains. The deep iron glaze sparkles silver-gray beneath the black lapis lazuli, and the purple highlights left by the reduction flame bleed subtly into each section. When placed in the palm of your hand, the smooth, pear-like texture stimulates the pads of your fingers, and with each sip, whether hot or chilled, you are transported to the tranquility of the night sky.

Scenery of iron glaze kiln changes

Silver-gray stardust : The iron crystals deposited on the surface reflect a moonlight-like light, changing its appearance with the light.

Purple-red fire : A thin reddish-purple runs around the edges of the steps, adding a warm aftertaste to the darkness.

Pear-skin texture : Fine crystal grains cover the skin, creating a unique texture that combines matte and gloss.

A look at history

Black-glazed sake vessels originated from the Setoguro and Iga sake bottles of the Momoyama period, and have been regarded as tools embodying the "aesthetics of darkness" among tea masters who appreciate the refined aesthetic of wabi-suki. This work continues that spirit, while using a modern step-cutting technique to create the stratus clouds of a night mountain. Okada Masaru has captured the twinkling stars in the night air of the coal mine and the moonlight layering the shading of the mountain shadows in the darkness of the iron glaze and the sparkle of silver-gray.

Conclusion

This iron-glazed kiln-fired sake bottle features layers of light and darkness. The ridges of the steps cast shadows as you pour sake, and the silver ash shimmers subtly around the rim. Whether you're enjoying a quiet drink or chatting with guests, this sake bottle will add a poetic touch to each and every drink, making it a perfect companion for years to come.
