The "Ash Glazed Carved Line Decorated Vase" by Yuichi Ikai is a unique piece that stands out for its unusual shape and deep brown glaze. This vase was made using a special clay that is not suitable for pottery, unlike ordinary clay, and its characteristics give the entire piece a unique texture and appeal.

Special clay selection and firing

Usually, clay used in pottery is fired to a suitable temperature and adheres well to the glaze, resulting in a highly finished work. However, the clay used for this vase has the characteristic of not being able to be fired to a high temperature, no matter how much it is fired. The glaze does not blend with the clay, and it is very difficult for the clay to adhere, making it a material that is difficult to handle using normal pottery techniques.

This special clay provided by Genryo-ya was fired many times, and we succeeded in bringing out its characteristics. The clay does not melt even after repeated firing, and has an extremely high fire resistance, so it can hold its shape well, even though regular pottery would collapse. This high fire resistance keeps the shape of the pot stable, even though it is unusual, and leaves a strong impression on the viewer.

A muted brown color and a matte surface

This vase is coated with a brown glaze, which gives it a subdued impression. Because the glaze does not dissolve into the clay, it creates a unique surface that is matte and lacking in shine, giving it a simple and solid feel, almost like an ancient vessel. This matte texture shows different expressions depending on the viewing angle and lighting, making it an element that can be enjoyed for a long time without tiring.
