White glaze tea bowl by Okada Masaru - "A breeze embraces the hazy mountain shadows in the silence of the light snow."

A blue silhouette swaying in the white moon

A pale gray-blue color permeates the surface of the white glaze, which is as soft as melting snow, creating a distant view of mountains sunk in morning mist. The contours, which are created not by a brush but by utilizing the permeation itself, are not uniform, and yet come alive, allowing you to imagine different mountain shadows every time you look at the work.

A three-sided opening that lets in the wind

The rim, which forms three valleys, has a gentle curve that seems to gently embrace the breeze. The ridges, which have been twisted by hand, create a flow throughout the bowl, and in harmony with the blue scenery on the outside, they represent "the moment when the wind sweeps away the clouds." When you touch it with your fingertips, the ridges gently guide it, allowing it to fit naturally in the palm of your hand.

The beauty of white and blue

The white glaze is as tranquil as a pure snow surface, yet contains a slight warmth that gently embraces the green of the tea. The pale blue color avoids making a strong statement, instead focusing on guiding the eye as an "episode in the margins," in keeping with the spirit of the tea ceremony, which values wabi and tranquility.

The artist's perspective

As Mr. Okada Masaru said, "Let the wind blow gently inside and outside the vessel," he has captured the quiet mountain breeze blowing in Uji and Sumiyama in this tea bowl. The interplay of white and blue is like the mist drifting through the valley in the early morning. Rather than being decorative, it is the posture of gently placing a moment of nature in the palm of your hand that spreads throughout the tea ceremony as a pure aftertaste.

The white of the light snow, the misty blue, and the ridgelines that guide the wind. The white glazed tea bowl reflects the seasons and time every time you pick it up, bringing a quiet, poetic sentiment to the once-in-a-lifetime encounter of the tea ceremony. Please treasure it for a long time and enjoy the changing scenery.
