京友禅は江戸時代元禄期、扇絵師・宮崎友禅斎が考案した染色技法に由来します。友禅斎は米糊で輪郭を描く「糸目」でにじみを防ぎ、多色染めを可能にしました。奢侈禁止令で豪華な織物が制限された際、友禅染めは町人の間で大流行し、絵画的な小袖として江戸中期の流行を牽引しました。京友禅は加賀・江戸と並ぶ三大友禅の一つで、金銀箔や刺繍を用いた華やかな意匠が特色です。明治には化学染料と型友禅が開発され大量生産が実現し、大正期には図案家の登場で多彩なデザインが生まれました。千總など老舗染匠は古典を継承しつつ革新を重ね、戦後は伝統工芸品に指定され世界的にも高い評価を得ています。京友禅は今も高度な染色技術と雅な美を誇り、日本の染織芸術の粋として輝き続けています。
