We are pleased to present the "Blue and White Porcelain Mizunohana Tea Bowl" by Ikura Kotaro, a ceramic artist active in Yagyu, Nara, the home of the master swordsman. This matcha bowl maintains the traditional dignity of tea ceremony pottery while shining with innovative design and craftsmanship. It is a special matcha bowl that combines Ikura's unique aesthetics with his outstanding technique.
The elegance and transparency of blue-and-white porcelain
The greatest appeal of the "Seipakuji Mizunohana Tea Bowl" is the beauty of its translucent seipakuji. A glaze that has been prepared over a long period of time is applied to the entire bowl, creating a delicate, sheer texture. The soft light blue of the seipakuji porcelain soothes the viewer's mind, like the surface of a tranquil stretch of water, making the tea ceremony experience even more special.
Innovative design while preserving the dignity of tea pottery
This matcha bowl features an innovative design while firmly maintaining the dignity of traditional tea pottery. Kotaro Ikura has breathed new life into the shape of the tea bowl, revealing new possibilities in the world of tea ceremony. This piece shows a free-thinking approach that is not bound by the traditional concept of a matcha bowl, yet it is outstanding in that it still maintains the formality and tranquility of the tea ceremony.
Delicate beauty of form and texture
The "Blue and White Porcelain Mizunohana Tea Bowl" is characterized by its delicate beauty, carefully carved out using a plane that is familiar to Ikura-sama's hands. When held in the hand, its smooth, flowing curves feel comfortable, and the elegant lines that spread throughout the bowl enhance its beauty. It is also exceptionally comfortable to use when actually making matcha, and you can enjoy its light feel that fits comfortably in the hand.
Design inspired by Mizunohana
As the title "Mizu no Hana" (Water Flower) suggests, the piece was named after the way it resembled a flower made of water when it was completed. The transparency of the pale blue porcelain and the subtle color of the glaze seem to reproduce the beauty of flowing water and flowers reflected on its surface. The curves surrounding the bowl evoke the natural beauty of flowing water, creating an impression of tranquility and elegance.
